Our workplan generally includes activities that address the "4 Ws" of watersheds:
Water Quality, Water Quantity, Weeds & Wildlife. Specific goals include (but are not limited to):

Increasing the quantity of water in Lolo Creek:
  • Maximizing instream flow
  • Working with irrigators to manage drought

Improving habitat and stream functions of Lolo Creek:
  • Streambank restoration (improving riparian vegetation and re-establishing meanders to slow velocity and reduce sediment -- see stream restoration page)
  • Habitat enhancement projects (installation of fish screens, improvement of pools and spawning sites, placement of large wood, re-establishing riparian vegetation)

Reducing the impacts of noxious weeds:
  •  Information for landowners on available resources for weed control

Organizational efforts include:
  • Outreach (4-6 public meetings each year, quarterly newsletter and website)
  • Coordination of Board (bi-monthly meetings) and Advisory Board
  • Fundraising
  • Membership
  • Coordination of Volunteers

A hearty THANK YOU to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for funding our work from 2008 to 2010. Funding from DEQ's Water Quality Planning Bureau's 319 nonpoint source pollution program supported our organizational work and enabled us to conduct our first water quantity assessments (see Monitoring page).

We were also awarded a $1500 DEQ mini-grant to create this website and produce two maps
of the Lolo watershed. We created:

        1)  A general watershed map with key geographic features (towns of Lolo and Florence,
streams and rivers, floodplain boundaries, mountain peaks and elevations, public and private
ownership, roads, forest and wilderness boundaries)

        2)  A map showing water rights (with water right number, priority date and flow rate) and
irrigation ditches that will be invaluable as we work to maximize instream flow.

To see the maps we created, contact any of the LWG Board members, or attend any of our
public meetings where they will be available.
